Lesson: False Teachings and Creeds Unit 4-Early Church Week: 4 Dates: February 4th – 8th
Objectives:
1. Students will discuss and then answer questions relating to creeds.
2. Students will learn the lessons and content from the church in the Middle Ages and the church of the Reformers by preparing lessons for them.

Monday
1. Crossword Quiz on Chapter 2.
2. Handout-Christian Creeds.
3. Prepare for teaching.

Tuesday
1. Chapters 3-7. Students prepare for lessons on Monday.

Lesson: Problems of the Early Church Unit 4-EarlyChurch-post Canon Week: 3 Dates: January 28th to February 1st
Objectives:
1. Students will discuss the differences common early Church false teaching of Marcionism and Gnosticism.
2. Students will review chapter 1.
3. Students will take a test over chapter 1.
4. Students will list the contributions of Constantine and analyze the evidence for and against his conversion.
5. Students will learn about the historical context that created a need for creeds by discussion and direct instruction.

Monday
1. Finish chapter 1.
2. Notes on Marcionism and Gnosticism from notes.

Tuesday
1. Review Chapter 1
2. Skits-Marcionism, Gnosticism, Judaizers, Authority of Leaders/Unity,

Lesson: Problems of the Early Church Unit 4-EarlyChurch-post Canon Week: 2 Dates: January 21-25

Objectives:
1. Students will analyze and summarize the two of the letters of the early church fathers.
2. Students will list reasons why Rome disliked and persecuted Christianity and Christians.
3. Students will analyze and organize information about early cults.
4. Students will review the 1st chapter/1st two weeks of class.

Monday
1. Handout – Irenaeus on Polycarp (written around AD 180)
2. Handout – Martyrdom of Polycarp (Polycarp died about AD 155)
3. Life of suffering-why is it difficult for us to grasp? Related verses:
The NT constantly warns and prepares us for a life of suffering: Mk. 8:34; Acts 5:41; 14:22; Rom. 8:17-18; Phil. 3:10; 2 Tim.
3:12; 1 Pet. 2:21; 4:1, 12-14. Since our Lord suffered and died we will also: 1 Thess. 1:4-7; Gal. 6:14-17; 2 Cor. 1:3-8; 4:7-12;
Col. 1:24.
4. What are the differences between self-denial and self-fulfillment? Brainstorm a list.

Lesson: Problems of the Early Church Unit 4-EarlyChurch-post Canon Week: 1 Dates: January 14-18
Objectives:
1. Students will express reasons why history is beneficial to study.
2. Students will predict and analyze four potential problems of the early church based on their study of the NT church.
3. Students will analyze the issues of unity, authority, and persecution in a historical and biblical manner.
4. Students will compare the lifestyles of self-denial and self-fulfillment and reflect upon the lifestyle of biblical Christianity.

Monday
1. Church History Survey.
2. Handout textbooks.
3. Read pages 9-12 and take a quiz.
4. Read pages 15-17 for tomorrow.

Tuesday
1. Brainstorm problems of the early church.
2. Page 19 lists four problems faced by the early church-unity, authority, persecution, measure of truth
